Minted since 1938, the Jefferson nickel is one of the longest-lived designs in U.S. coinage history. Beginning in 2004, the reverse of the nickel began to bear different commemorative designs of the westward exploration of the early 1800s. In 2006, the bust of Jefferson was also redesigned.
