In 1932, the Washington Quarter made its debut as a one-year commemorative piece honoring George Washington's 200th birthday. In 1933, no quarters were produced due to the depression, but due to extreme popularity, the Washington Quarter design was brough back when quarter production restarted in 1934. Until 1999, when the statehood quarter series began, the reverse of the quarter featured an eagle perched on bundled arrows above an olive branch. Since 1999, five states each year have put a design commemorating their state on the reverse of the quarter. Washington's bust was also slightly modified in 1999.
