"Early Year" proof sets mark the reintroduction of proof coinage for the collector since the long hiatus from 1916. The technique was apparently lost, as the average proof coin from these years does not share the lovely cameo contrast as the earlier years. The 36-42 coins were sold as individual coins, not as sets. One could order 1 coin of each denomination and build a set. They were shipped together when ordered together.
